The Letter
Amber realized that she was shaking when everyone else left the room except Attorney Harrison. She took a heavy breath to lessen the anxiety she is feeling. It was so tense earlier that she thought she would just throw up. She could not handle the dagger looks she was getting from Devlin’s father. As much as she tried to understand his outburst but that did not stop her from shaking. She is scared. She never thought in her wildest imagination that she would ever get involved in such a serious matter.
First of all, she never thought she would inherit a large sum of money and some properties which would cost millions of dollars. Second, her shotgun wedding to Devlin was something she never thought would ever happen to her. And now, she earned the wrath not only from Devlin but as well as from his father. It is basically the entire Wesley family although they were not vocal with their emotions.
“Attorney Harrison, what should I do now? I am sure everyone would love to see me gone in no time. You saw everything…how–how Devlin’s father unleashed his anger. I know everyone blames me including Devlin himself. But what should I do? I honestly don’t want to do anything with all of these.” She looked around the library without thought. She could not understand why she had to bear all these troubles. She covered her face with both hands. Things are getting complicated every single day. She questioned why Devlin’s grandmother put her in this situation. She thought the old woman liked her.
“I am sure that Olivia would not put you in this position if she had not seen anything special about you. Probably, she knows how capable you are. Although at first I questioned her decision, when I saw you, I changed my mind. You need to figure it out yourself.” Declared Attorney Harrison with a consoling voice. His gentle words made her break into silent tears.
“Thank you so much, Attorney Harrison. You just don’t know how much I needed to hear that. It means a lot to me.” She said gratefully with a sincere smile.
“You can do it. I saw a brave yet gentle young lady. Olivia did all of these for a reason.” Added the lawyer.
“By the way, I have something to give you. This is a letter which was written by Olivia herself a few months ago. She wrote this a few days after she revised her last will.” He
took a small envelope inside his suit and handed it to Amber.
“Please take care, Ms. Adams.. err.. Mrs. Wesley. You have my number. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to contact me.” He slightly bowed down his head before he left the room.
Amber saw her name nicely written at the back of the envelope. She smiled thinking of Grandma Olivia. She could not stop her tears from flowing. And before she could open the letter, Devlin came to the library without heeding her tear-stained face.
“Are you ready? I still have something to do today.” He said nonchalantly. Amber stood up in silence. She can’t bear this treatment from Devlin and from anyone else from his family. She feels like she is a villain in a movie, only this is in real-life. How she can get out from all these problems… she still has no idea.
As usual, they drove in silence back to Devlin’s penthouse. He parked the car and got out without saying anything to her. Together, they went to the elevator still in silence. Amber could not take it anymore.
“Uhm… are you going out somewhere?” Her question earned a smirk from Devlin.
“Wherever I go is none of your business. Put this in your head.” He went closer to her while pressing his index finger on her forehead.
“I don’t want you to go in any of my business just as I don’t care what you are doing with your life. Consider me as a stranger. I am only your husband on paper.” He said each word viciously.
“Then, why don’t we divorce and be done with it? I don’t want to deal with any of these.” Amber retaliated back.
“Don’t you dare say any of those words. You do as I say. You can only leave here on my own terms. Understood?!” He pulled her arm tightly and suddenly let go of her. She almost went down to the floor, good thing she was able to lean against the wall before she would completely fall down.
“By the time you have served me, you can leave any time you want.” His callous words really cut deep inside her heart. She only smiled at him bitterly. Might as well throw herself to the vast ocean and get lost than suffer this vile treatment from her “husband”.
When the elevator door opened, Devlin immediately went out and marched to his room. He slammed it so hard that the entire place was shaking.
Amber immediately went to her room and threw herself on her bed. She was crying hard. She missed her marmee so much but she could not bring it upon herself to talk to her about her problem. She cried as much as she could until she fell asleep from exhaustion.RêAd lat𝙚St chapters at Novel(D)ra/ma.Org Only
She woke up from a faint sound outside her door. She does not know what it is but she is too tired to care. Her body is aching all over. She sat down on her bed. She reached out for her phone and checked the time. It is past 7 pm. She has been asleep for hours. The meeting with the attorney was almost before lunch. She didn’t even get to eat lunch. That’s why she heard her stomach’s non-stop grumbling. She is hungry.
She went to the bathroom to take a quick shower. When she checked herself in the mirror, she was a complete mess. Her eyes were puffy from crying herself to exhaustion. She put on a fresh floral dress. She blow-dried her hair quickly. Then, she went out to go to the kitchen. She needs to check what food she could cook. She is starving now.
She quickly made salad and just boiled some eggs. She does not have time to thaw the meat from the freezer. She is that hungry. She quickly finished her food. She made some fresh juice for herself. After she was done in the kitchen, she went to the living room, just staring at nothing. Her mind is busy elsewhere. She checked around the place and there is no sign that Devlin is around. With a deep sigh, she went to her room. She just wanted to lay down and not think of anything else. Then, she saw the envelope from Grandma Olivia. She set it earlier on her bedside table.
She immediately sat down and reached for it. She adjusted the light from her lampshade so she could read the letter well. She opened the envelope and she saw a clear, nice penmanship in cursive. She could not stop herself from smiling and crying at the same time.
My dearest Amber,
Knowing you was one of the best days in my life. You could not have appeared at the most appropriate moment in my life. I was alone and lonely and ready to leave this world filled with sad thoughts. When I first saw you, you were a breath of fresh air. Your infectious smile and charming ways had just uplifted this poor woman’s spirit.
Imagine my great surprise when I found out that you are the granddaughter of my good old friend, Amelia. Thank you for leading me back towards your grandmother. I could not thank you enough for meeting you that fateful day at the hospital.
You and your grandmother had made the last months of my life truly worth living. I forgot how to live when my husband died. My own family were distant from each other. I was very sad that it happened that way. Even my own son was not there during my trying times. It was with my grandson Devlin that I found my comfort. He has changed a lot over the years. He had his own fair share of shortcomings but I can attest that he is a great person. He just needed the right woman to bring out that best version in him.
And by now, I know you both have been married. I am sorry for that. I knew that both of you detested what I did. But trust me, with my years of experience in this life, you two would make great partners in life. You just haven’t figured it out yourself yet. And when you do, you will thank me later on.
Anyway, I would not want to tire you from my incessant ramblings…I just want you to give yourself a chance to get to know my grandson deeply. Be more patient and understanding with him. And once he opens up to you, for sure he will be at your every beck and call. What I meant to say is that I know in my heart that you both will find what you are looking for in each other. You complete each other…I already knew the moment I saw you.
Much love,
Grandma Olivia
After reading the letter, Amber was greatly astonished at how much Grandma Olivia believed that Devlin and her would really make it to the end. That they will figure it out together. Figure out what? Love?
Based on the letter she just read, she found Grandma Olivia is a person who strongly believed in the notion of love and romance. Amber doubts that Devlin and her could go to that level. How can Grandma Olivia think otherwise? What has she seen that only her eyes can see?
Amber sees things differently. She saw an evil man who used her upfront to get back to his ex-girlfriend, Raven. She saw a man who hated every inch of her. She feels that every single day from him. And most of all, his entire family hated her.
‘Grandma…I do not know what to feel right now. What you did is unbelievable but I cannot bring myself to hate you. You were such a compassionate woman. And I admire your courage despite
everything you have been through. But I just can’t see myself and Devlin as a couple who are in love with each other.’ She felt sad thinking about it.
Thinking of Grandma Olivia right now made her miss her marmee. She wanted to call her but she could not talk straight to her without breaking down. And that is the last thing she wants to happen to her marmee. She has been thinking for a long while without noticing that Devlin has not returned home yet. She fell asleep after a few hours.
