Chapter 50 Turning the Tide
Elijah squinted his eyes, scrutinizing Liora. “About the child?”
Liora forced composure. “Yes, the embryo organization I gave you is indeed mine. The blood flowing from my body is not because of my menstrual cycle, as the doctor claimed, but due to a miscarriage. How many women have you been with? You should know the chances of them carrying your child. I can lie, but can the embryo organization lie?”
Elijah remained impassive on the surface. Internally, he was already contemplating. He had been with a woman only once. The only woman who could have a child from that encounter was the one from that night.
Liora could lie. But the embryo test couldn’t. The reason he hadn’t pursued it further was simply to avoid any involvement with Liora.
Liora continued, “It was the doctor who lied. He was bribed to deliberately frame me.”
“Is that so?” Elijah raised an eyebrow, slightly cold.
“The doctor is downstairs. You can question him anytime.” Liora boldly declared.
She dared to come prepared. She wasn’t afraid of Elijah’s inquiries; she was afraid he wouldn’t ask.
“I couldn’t possibly fake something like this, and I couldn’t make it up. The only explanation is that someone is deliberately framing me.” Liora persisted. Tears welled up in her eyes, portraying a pitiful image. This time she played it smart, avoiding mention of previous events and focusing on the present. “Telling you this lie benefits me in no way. Once you know the truth, you’ll despise me, causing me harm with no gain. Do I have any reason to do this?”
Elijah scoffed, “Whether you have a reason, you know in your own heart.”
He no longer trusted this woman. The only unexplainable aspect was the embryo. If Liora was lying, where did the embryo come from?
There was only one explanation. A woman had indeed carried his child.
Liora moved her lips. She was undeterred and continued, “If you think I lied, then go investigate.”
She vowed with a sincere and innocent appearance, presenting herself as a victim.
“Even if that embryo is yours, if you’ve carried my child, so what?” Elijah’s tone softened slightly, not as harsh as before.
Although he disliked Liora, there was still a trace of sympathy for a woman with whom he had an intimate encounter.
“How much money do you want?” He just wanted to use money to end this unexpected relationship.
Liora looked at him and said, “If I were really after your money, I would have asked when you inquired about my desires. If I were greedy for you, I would have sought something when you offered marriage. But I didn’t, because I know there’s no love between us. I don’t want to bind you with that night.”Content is property of NôvelDrama.Org.
Elijah grew more and more impatient. He tugged at his collar, sneering, “So, do I have to thank you?”
“No, I thought we could develop feelings for each other…”
“I can’t develop feelings for you,” Elijah thought of her behavior with that man in the private room, feeling nauseated.
“As for why, I think you should know in your heart.” Elijah reminded her.
If Liora voluntarily confessed at this moment, Elijah might still consider her a daring person. However, she didn’t dare let Elijah know about Rylan Hawke. She kept silent about it.
“Since you don’t want money, what’s the purpose of your visit?” Elijah asked.
“I just don’t want you to misunderstand me. I came to explain, and that’s it.” Liora dared not ask for anything. She came to salvage what was left with Elijah.
“In that case, I already know. You can leave!” After saying that, Elijah closed the door without showing any mercy.
Liora, “…”
This was different from what she expected. At this moment, shouldn’t Elijah be questioning that doctor whom she had already bribed?
As long as Elijah asked, he would say Freya paid the doctor to deliberately frame her. It was a plan that killed two birds with one stone. It could incriminate Freya while also proving to Elijah that her didn’t fake her pregnancy, preserving her image in his eyes.
But why didn’t Elijah ask?
Liora couldn’t understand. She wanted to use this incident to turn the tide. However, Elijah didn’t follow her planned course of action.
She raised her hand to knock on the door, but Elijah’s secretary warned, “Persistently pestering him will only make him dislike you more.”
Lior’s hand paused mid-air. She fell into contemplation.
The secretary’s words seemed to make some sense.
Did Elijah need time to process?
Would pushing too hard only backfire?
Liora turned around, saw the secretary giving her a disdainful look, and walked away briskly.
Elijah stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, at a height and position that allowed him to overlook the most prosperous part of the city. He lowered his gaze, vaguely seeing the doctor standing by the car. Shortly after, Liora came out, and whatever they discussed, they both got into the car.
The office door opened, and the secretary stood at the doorway, saying quietly, “Miss Valentine has left.”
Elijah responded with a faint “Hmm.”
The secretary hesitated for a moment and then asked, “Should we investigate the doctor? Maybe he was really bribed, lied…”
Elijah said, “No.”
The doctor could lie, but the embryo couldn’t. He had been with only one woman, and that woman was Liora from that night. That was why she dared to come here with such confidence.
Perhaps Liora had carried his child. But it was not important to him now. The child was already gone. His responsibility had been taken. In fact, he wanted to avoid facing the fact that Liora had been pregnant with his child again.
What was done was done.
The secretary didn’t know Elijah’s thoughts and dared not speculate. She carefully left the office.
…
In the villa.
Freya realized she couldn’t open the door.
The door was locked.
She pounded on the door, “Linda, Linda…”
Linda climbed the stairs and ran up.
“Madam, please stop knocking. The door was locked by Mr Silverton…”
Freya was speechless.
What did he mean by this? Was he afraid she would run away again? Or did he intend to imprison her?
“Linda, I’m hungry. Could you open the door? I just want to go out and eat something…”
Linda hesitated, “Mr Silverton ordered not to give you any food.”
“What?”
Freya stared at the door in front of her, wondering if this man wanted to starve her.
He was truly ruthless!
“Madam, you better be still now and conserve your energy…”
Freya gave up knocking on the door and sat down on the bed. She calmed herself.
Elijah said she would pay the price, and the price had come so quickly?
This man really kept his word.
But now the most urgent thing was to figure out how to get out.
She couldn’t really starve to death in here.
Freya took a deep breath, gently stroking her belly. “Baby, Mom won’t let you go hungry.”
If she didn’t have anything to eat, it meant her child wouldn’t get any nutrition. She absolutely couldn’t sit idly by.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration hit her.
