Chapter 217: Night SCARE

"So that the mold grooving on their bodies from sitting too long will be dispersed by the wind," Lydia answered again.

"So, they tagged along as a vacation," Ethel said.

"Given that some of them have already sworn their allegiance to the mold, it might as well be

a punishment," Lydia answered, and three of them turned around to notice the graduate students were staring at them.

"Child, is this how we taught you to talk?" Cindy asked, and Lydia rolled her eyes.

"Forgive the child; her mouth is legendary for catastrophe," Ethel said, pushing Lydia back to making her tents.

coursemates said.

"She rarely talks, but when she does..." another said and trailed off.

"It's fine; you will get used to it. It is only for a few days, after all," a professor said, only to pause. "But now that I think about it, the engineering workshop course that joined last year is still recovering from her mouth," he seemed to mutter, but was still heard, before instructing them to continue with their task.

They all thought that the graduate class was angry, but they were actually taken aback instead. To them, she had not really said anything poisonous. But the more people talked, the more they wondered if she had spared them.

"Sister-in-law is legendary, I see." Ethan commented, but Harry's eyes only followed Lydia a bit before looking away.

"Are you not supposed to join the group in the kitchen?" he asked, and Ethen hurried away.

After a while, Harry could not escape his professor, who dragged him along to go fishing. Whether they had returned with much or not, Lydia did not notice.

That night, they ate early. Many sat around into the night, joking around, while others went to sleep. Even though Lydia had slept on the bus, she was still quite tired, so she decided to retire early. She sprayed some bug spray in her tent and waited a while before going to sleep. But sleep still deluded her. She ate some snacks in her tent and continued watching her drama. There was barely any signal in the woods, so she was quite happy that she had downloaded the episodes while on the bus. After a few drinks, she felt pressed deep into the night. She took off her earpiece, and the silence of the night descended on her. She took out a lamp and carefully came out of her tent. There were bathrooms on the campsite, but it was quite a bit far from

where they all slept. She looked towards Cindy and Ethel's tents and noticed no light inside, so she assumed they must have gone to sleep. She took a deep breath, looked in the direction of the toilets, and started walking over.

"Lord Harry, lead the way," she muttered repeatedly as she walked over. After a long walk, she got to the toilets and went in to do her business. When she walked out, it was even darker than she had recalled it being when she was walking in. She adjusted her mind and started walking back. As she did, she heard ghostly whispers in the dark that caused her to freeze. She looked around with her eyes, not daring to move her head. At the corner of her eyes, she saw a figure in white in the direction of the campsite. The figure held up a low lamp and raised her hand to beckon to her slowly.

"No, thank you." Lydia said this and ran in the opposite direction. As she ran, she heard whispers following her. But for some reason, she dared not scream. She ran a bit until she was tired and had to stop. At this point, she realized she was lost.

"Stupid ghost," she said in frustration, only then realizing it might not have been a ghost. Just at that moment, a hand grabbed her shoulder, and she howled.

"Lord Harry, light the way, Lord Harry, lead the way," she chanted and broke into a run. She ran while swinging her lamp around, barely able to see ahead of her. Soon, she ran into a

person.

"Lord Harry!" she cried.

"Yes?" she heard a familiar voice answer. She looked up while using her lamp to shield her from anyone who was in front of her. When she looked up, she saw Harry Madison's face illuminated by her lamp and grabbed him in fear.

"Ghost! Lord Harry, ghosts everywhere," she cried.

Harry looked down at the girl wrapped around his midsection and almost broke out in

laughter.

"They are not ghosts. A lot of us are playing a game," he said with a slight chuckle. He noticed that someone was nearing, so he put off her lamp and grabbed her head, forcing her face against his chest to muffle her crying, before he retreated behind a tree.

"Shush. We can't get caught," he whispered, and her crying seized. They were in that position for quite a while before he let her go.

"Come," he instructed as he pulled her away from the area. She followed him silently until they were in a dense cluster of trees. They took refuge behind a small bush.

"What is going on?" Lydia asked in a whisper.

The rest of us that remained to chat into the night were caught by the lecturers and handed the toilet duties. The professors had forgotten to assign the cleaning, so it was given to us as punishment because some of us were making so much noise. No one wanted to do it, so we

decided on this game." Harry explained.

"Are you all children, playing ghosts in the middle of the night so as not to clean toilets?" Lydia asked.

"I am not cleaning those toilets," Harry said.

"I am not one of you guys; why should I get dragged into cleaning toilets?" Lydia protested.

"Since you are not among them, you can go back with no issues. I am sure they will let you pass." Harry said.

"How do you

know? What if they mistake me for one of you and I end up cleaning the toilets tomorrow?" she asked.

"It's fine. There are four who have already been picked to clean by the professors when they came over to hand it out; the rest of us refused to join, and they still need four people. Three of them are playing ghosts with the help of those from the acting department; the other is at camp, making sure that none of us go back and hide in our tents. They know exactly who is part of the game. They won't make a mistake," he assured her.

"That's good," Lydia said, then paused. "But they will still scare me, right? I am too scared to go back on my own." she said, and he was amused by her scared attitude.

"If you let me hide in your tent, I will take you back," he said, and she paused.

"Why should I?" she asked.

"Then, why should I send you back?" he asked.

"Of course, because I got dragged into this," she muttered.

"Then, there is no problem going back on your own; after all, I have already said that you won't be mistaken as part of those playing the game. You are the one to go back on your own," he said. She took in his words and made to get up, only to drop back down. Considering his offer again, she grabbed onto his arm.

"You won't be there long, right?" she asked.

"I have to be there till morning. Someone will be taking rounds checking if we are hiding in our tents, but no one will be checking yours," he said, and she paused.
