Chapter 7
It has been a week since we landed at Demondtree. Harold has kept me busy with work in the kitchen and cleaning after guests leave. I have also enrolled Katie in the local school. We had to have a long conversation about not talking about wolves, but I think she is ready. I feel comfortable here. Harold had only two other staff working with him. Arnold the cook and Jenny, who was a waitress. They welcomed the additional help. I have taken over all the baking and running of food. Jenny takes orders and runs food when she is slow. Arnold is a wonderful chef and Katie even helps in the evenings.
Harold himself had done all the upkeep in the hotel after their last employee had left. I understand that although we are on the edge of the big city, this hotel is frequented by wolves. I know this is a risk if any of them recognize me. It is a risk I am willing to take though, as it is free room, food and Harold pays me a good amount, which is more than I can ask.
I am sure the Dark Moon does not come here often. I recall when they visit the city they normally stay at the most prestigious hotels. This would not be on their radar. The wolves that have been at the hotel just nod at me with understanding but do not address me formally.
It is for this reason that Sasha and I have agreed that tomorrow we will shift. There is a human park with a large forest not too far from here. I have requested the night off and Jenny has agreed to take Katie. Jenny has a seven-year-old girl named Vanessa. Vanessa and Katie get along wonderfully, and I believe they will be great friends.
I am excited about shifting and connecting with Sasha. The only potential threat is that any wolf will be able to scent my wolf after we shift. They shouldn't be able to notice the difference just that I am now a wolf.
Sasha has told me little about my magic other than I have both wolf and witch blood in my veins, which makes me extra powerful. It also may put a target on me as I will be equal to royalty without being royal. She doesn't know why I have both other than I do. Like a royal, if I step foot on pack space after a shift, the Alpha will be able to sense the power of the royal line. Therefore, we could not shift before.
The day flew by and soon it was time for our first shift. "Sasha, are you ready?" I asked.
"I have been pacing all day!"
"I know I can feel you." I laughed. "First we must drop Katie off." I have everything I need in my backpack. Some money and extra clothes incase the shift doesn't go as we hoped. I also packed a backpack for Katie for her first sleepover. "Why can't I come with you?" Katie cried.
"I think it would be dangerous if my shift doesn't go well or I get caught." I tried to reason. Her look of dissatisfaction was apparent in her frown. "I also think Vanessa would be really sad if you didn't spend the night. Jenny has told me she has made plans to bake cookies and stay up late watching movies. You wouldn't want to miss out on your first slumber party?"
"I guess not."
"Good now let's go, it is 9 and Jenny is just getting off work."
"Be safe and don't leave me."
"Never Katie. Nothing can stop me from finding you. Always remember that we are family."Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
"I know. I love you, Filli."
"I love you too. Now let's go!"
After dropping Katie off with Jenny, I started off to the park. It was a 2-mile walk. I planned to run another 4 miles off the trails so I could find a place alone to shift. The fall air was crisp with a breeze of winter's promises. This was going to be the perfect day to shift. At the park's edge, I lifted my backpack over my shoulders and took off at a sprint. The moon was full above me, giving off light between the branches. I was hopping over fallen branches and roots. I felt so free. I came to a clearing and lifted my head to the air. I couldn't sense anyone near.
"This is the place," Sasha said with excitement. I put the backpack down and started to get undressed so as to not tear any of my clothes. "Focus on me. Let me take over."
I started to think of Sasha. I could feel my bones crack and pop. There was a slight pain as my spine elongated and claws came from my hands. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
"It is done. Open your eyes, Filli."
I did as Sasha had asked. I looked down. To white paws with silver glistening through in places. "We need to find a lake. I know there is one nearby, I can hear it." My sight was heightening even in the dark I could see definitions that weren't there before. I could also hear distant footsteps of someone on the path a mile from us. I reminded myself not to go in that direction.
"Sasha, are you ready to run?"
With that question we took off. I was no longer in control, so I didn't have to think about where the trees were. We just jumped over them. We were going really fast and in no time we were at the water's edge. I took a look at my wolf.
"Sasha, you are beautiful!" I rejoiced at the sight. I was large in stature, unlike my human form. I think I might even be larger than Alpha Alex. I was white as snow with silver and golden streaks in my fur not much, just enough to make it look like it was glistening. My eyes were a bright violet. "Violet, Sasha, we have violet eyes."
"Yes, that is due to our magic. When we use magic or are in our wolf form, our eyes will change to violet."
"Sasha? Can we do magic in wolf form or only in human form?"
"I don't know let's find out," replied Sasha. "Try to pick up the water." I tried to move the water up and onto land but no success. I thought really hard about it focusing so that I could image the water forming into a ball raising out of the lake. Still nothing. "Sasha, can we shift back and try?"
"Yes."
I shifted back to my human self and looked at the lake. My eyes still glowed violet. I tried focusing again so that I could image the water forming into a ball rising out of the lake. I opened my eyes to see a perfect ball of water was right in front of me. I reached out and touched it and, like a bible was popped, the water fell to the ground in a big splash.
Suddenly, I heard a twig snap not too far away. I listened in that direction. I could hear voices not too far from the lake. I could not let anyone find me here naked. I shifted and took off running as fast as I could back into the forest towards where we left the backpack.
As we ran, I could hear a man say, "Did you see that? I swear I just saw a large white wolf."
