Chapter 300
Chapter 300
Alex arrived swiftly. His shoulders were drenched from the downpour, making the severity of the
weather clear.
Jessica greeted him with a smile and a wave. “Have you eaten? If not, please join us.”
Glancing down, Alex’s eyes unintentionally swept across Candice. She was silently observing the rain
through the window, her expression unreadable.
The sudden downpour had started just before Alex’s arrival, and it had only intensified since. Securing
a taxi was always a challenge on rainy days.
Candice had been banned by Hanley and Yana from driving due to her shoulder injury. She had taken
a taxi to get here today. Even If she were able to drive, the journey back would pose difficulties. Her
vision was poor in the dark, making nighttime driving dangerous.
Inwardly debating her options, Candice had resolved that if returning home proved impossible, she
would consider staying at a hotel close by for the evening.
Helen’s stern voice drew her back into the present. “Dinner, really? Is he here for a pickup or to dine?”
her comments dripped with sarcasm.
“Helen, be mindful of your words,” Jessica chided softly.
Helen responded flatly. “You’re always trying to be the savior, but you have no idea that you’re feeding
other people’s pretexts. Haven’t you noticed that certain individuals have overstayed their
welcome?”
Her comment was unmistakably directed at Candice.
Unfazed by Helen’s harsh words, Candice wondered if this woman thought she was clinging to her son
or was it simply her habit to target her? She responded sharply. “I wonder why Mrs. Elysian dislikes
Sonia? The similarity in your manner of speaking is striking, both of you are cut from the
same cloth.”
“What are you implying?” Helen hissed quietly.
Candice had formerly held Helen in high regard. When Helen expressed signs of displeasure, she
would swiftly soften her stance to pacify her. However, those days were long gone, the two no longer
had anything to do with each other.
Helen was used to dominating others. Every time she saw Candice, she still treated her as if she Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
was under her influence.
With an icy look, Candice replied calmly. “Can’t Mrs, Elysian get my drift? You and Sonia ep making
snarky remarks. Birds of a feather flock together, it seems your son has chosen the perfect daughter–
in–law for you.”
Candice’s comments had condemned not only Helen, but also Alex and Sonia.
Helen was visibly seething, her chest rising and falling swiftly in rage. She pointed at Candice
exclaiming. “You dare to speak to me in such a manner?”
“It seems you’ve forgotten. Sonia should be at your beck and call, not me.”
With that said, Candice felt the sharp intensity of a cold stare upon her. She did not shy away but
instead confidently locked eyes with Alex.
His gaze was icy and his expression seemingly frosted over, his gaze piercing through Candice as
it to scrutinize her.
Unfazed, Candice blinked and boldly confronted Alex’s stern look, questioning. “Am I wrong?”
Alex’s lips were a tight line, silent in response to her query.
Candice’s expression conveyed a note of mockery. As far as she was concerned, her claims were
quite real.
Jessica was caught off guard by Candice’s forthrightness. She paused before attempting to
defuse the tension. “Looks like the rain isn’t going to stop anytime soon. Don’t mind your mom, Alex.
Join us, if you haven’t had your dinner.”
Alex replied with a frosty tone. “I have other obligations after this.”
Hearing his words, Jessica acknowledged, “Your schedule must be hectic, especially with the Quinton
partnership recently. I didn’t think it through before asking you here.”
“I’ll drive you home,” Alex offered.
After only a short time inside, the rain which wetted his body had dried into damp patches on his
shoulders. With Alex standing between Candice and Jessica, Candice could feel the chill emanating
from him.
As it became clear the dinner had concluded, Jessica rose to her feet.
Helen was clearly aggravated by Candice’s remarks. Her appetite was spoiled. She grabbed her bag
and left in a huff.
Candice took out her phone, Intending to text Hanley to inform him that she would not be returning
tonight.

Ms. Renault with the rain pouring like this, how do you plan to get home?” Jessica asked,
concerned.
Candice had no issues with Jessica, so answered. “I plan to stay at a hotel close by.”
Jessica looked reluctant. “The closest hotel requires a ten–minute walk, and hailing a cab in this
downpour is challenging.”
“I’ll wait for the rain to ease before heading out,” Candice replied, unbothered by the situation.
“With the rain coming down this hard, can’t Hanley just come and get you?” Alex asked
sarcastically, his voice carrying a cold and haughty undertone.
“And what does this have to do with you?” Candice retorted, slightly annoyed.
Alex’s eyes darkened. It formed a shadow that appeared much more foreboding than the awful
weather outside. “You should have been grateful.”
Candice lifted her eyebrows slightly. Was this man expecting gratitude from her? She let out a
gentle huff. Her voice was tinged with frustration and irritation as she chastised, “You’re acting
too high and mighty.”
He always judged her harshly, looked down on her and left her out in the cold. If being naive was her
fault, then committing her entire heart to Alex was her biggest mistake.
Their heated exchange was cut short by Alex’s phone ringing. Alex scowled slightly when he checked
his phone’s caller ID.
His grandfather’s concerned voice was on the line. “There’s a thunderstorm outside. I remember Candy
suffers from night blindness. I’m not sure if she’s out, but if you care, give her a call and
check on her.”
“You don’t have to worry.” Alex pointed out, frowning.
“Shouldn’t I worry? If I hadn’t stepped in, you’d have brought your bimbo home by now. You better treat
Candy right if you don’t wish to follow in your father’s footsteps, okay?”
Shawn’s voice carried, loud enough for Jessica and Candice to overhear some of the talk.
Candice’s hand tightened slightly. Even though her time with Alex’s grandfather was brief–just two
years he recalled her night blindness.
Alex looked down. His eyes fell on Candice’s clenched fist.
He responded to Shawn with a hard voice, suppressing the mocking in his tone. “You want me to be
nice to her? Do you think she’ll be grateful for that?”

Alex hung up the phone, but his gaze remained riveted on Candice, his eyes chilly.
After a minute, he impatiently asked, “Didn’t you hear him?”
Candice remained calm. “Hear what, exactly?”
The rain was pouring outside, with raindrops forming long lines under the streetlights at night.
“Ms. Renault, whether you’re headed to a hotel or home, it might be best if Alex drove you,” Jessica
suggested kindly. “With the rain like this, it’s impossible to predict when it will stop. Old Mr. Elysian is
worried about you, and he’ll only worry more if he finds out you were out in this
weather.”
Candice was briefly swayed when Jessica mentioned Shawn, but her firm stanced recovered fast and
ready to turn down the offer when her phone rang unexpectedly.
It was Old Mr. Elysian.
She felt an innate reluctance to answer the phone as Shawn’s timing was spot on.
