Chapter 0548
Chapter 0548
The police arrived swiftly. Oscar seemed to know what the outcome would be, or perhaps he had long anticipated it, so he didn't resist and just waited for the police to handcuff him.
But before leaving, he laughed again as he passed by Alex and Candice. "The Elysians are nothing. Daniel is a scumbag, and you're an idiot!"
In his laughter, there was both the gratification of revenge and an inexplicable sense of desolation, but more than anything, there was hatred toward the Elysians. This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
Alex was eventually taken to the hospital.
The rooftop Oscar had chosen was originally part of an abandoned factory, with many sharp steel scraps, broken glass, and gravel scattered everywhere.
As Alex shielded Candice and rolled across the floor, his back was scratched by the scraps, leaving many wounds. The steel fragments were embedded in his flesh, resulting in a bloody mess.
Candice recalled the moment when Alex's face turned pale as she tried to pull him up and felt a dull pain in her heart.
"I advise you to bandage your wounds as well. Otherwise, after Lex comes out of the surgery room, he'll have to endure his own injuries to take care of you." Sieg's indifferent voice rang out nearby, bringing Candice's thoughts back from the rooftop.
The smell of hospital disinfectant stung Candice's nose as she looked at her wrists. Although Alex had shielded her for the most part, she couldn't have escaped unscathed, especially since she had been tied up with ropes when she fell.
Candice wasn't in great shape. She was covered in mud stains, and her wrists were scraped and swollen, looking quite frightening.
She remained silent for a moment, her throat still sore and her head heavy. Candice parted her dry lips and hoarsely thanked Sieg.
Sieg had brought the police to the scene. He promptly called them after Alex left, then somehow contacted Alex and followed his car with the police.
Sieg scoffed. "I don’t care whether you live or die. I'm just worried about Lex."
"Oh, by the way…" Sieg scratched his head absentmindedly. "When I came, I asked your nanny to help take care of your daughter. I also contacted Yana last night; she should be coming over today."
Recalling the time spent tormented by that little troublemaker, Sieg was still somewhat upset. "Your daughter is just like you; she’s very unlikable."
Candice didn't say anything, as she was too weak.
She hadn't eaten or drunk anything since yesterday afternoon, and her mind had been tightly wound.
She looked at the lit-up operating room sign in front of her while gritting her teeth to keep herself from collapsing.
Her mind kept flashing back to the moment when Alex signed the contract without hesitation and then kneeled before her. She couldn’t help but recall him smiling at her with a pale face while lying on the ground.
Candice felt like her head was about to explode.
A particularly uncomfortable and indescribable emotion surged through her body. The surge of emotions invaded her bones, causing her to feel numb and suffocated, but she couldn't get rid of that feeling.
Alex's surgery lasted for three hours, during which a nurse came out once.
Sieg inquired about the situation, and the nurse explained that because there were tiny fragments embedded, they needed to be carefully removed to avoid complications. Hence, a thorough examination was necessary, as leaving such fragments in the body could lead to more trouble.
After Alex came out of the operating room, he also needed to be observed in the ICU overnight because the foreign objects might carry viruses or cause infection.
When Alex was finally wheeled out and taken to the ICU, the doctor reassured Candice that everything was fine and they just needed to wait for further observation. However, Candice's legs almost gave out.
She managed to hold onto the nearby wall, preventing herself from collapsing directly to the ground.
Sieg looked down at her. "Lex can't see you anyway. Why are you still pretending to be strong?"
Candice was in a sorry state. Leaning against the wall, she looked fragile. Sieg reached out, seemingly wanting to help her up.
But when he saw the dirty clothes on Candice's body, his face instantly filled with disgust. He retracted his hand and called a passing nurse.
Candice had varying degrees of abrasions on her wrists and shoulders, and she was also running a fever.
She had just been admitted to the ward when Yana arrived with Ellis, followed by Hanley.
Candice froze when she saw Hanley. Hanley noticed her expression, and a hint of bitterness flashed in his eyes.
Candice quickly snapped back and asked, "Why are you guys here?"
"If we hadn’t come, did you plan to keep this from us?" Yana was a bit angry, and she reproached Candice while holding Ellis. "Do you still consider me a friend?"
Candice was silent for a moment. "Of course, I consider you a friend. But even if I wanted to tell you, I didn't have the chance."
She had been tied up by Oscar, who took her phone. Besides, it had only been a day since the incident. She hadn’t had the chance to tell Yana what happened.
Yana burst into tears. "I know. I was just saying that. I was afraid you wouldn't tell us anything. You have no idea how scared I was when Sieg told me you were kidnapped!"
Yana was terrified when she heard that Candice had been kidnapped by Oscar, and she immediately booked the nearest flight and flew over.
Holding Ellis, Yana saw the gauze on Candice's hands, and she wanted to touch it but was scared of hurting her. She could only grit her teeth and say, "Is Oscar crazy? What does it have to do with you if he wants revenge on Alex? He hurt you for no reason!"
At the mention of Alex, Candice became silent again. Yana and the others didn't know what had happened at the time, but Candice had seen firsthand how much Alex sacrificed for her, and he did it without hesitation.
Candice felt upset again when she had just calmed herself down. She pressed her lips together and explained softly, "Actually, Alex…"
But before she could finish her sentence, she stopped. She didn't know how to retell what had happened.
"How is he?" Hanley's warm, deep voice interjected, seamlessly picking up where Candice left off. "When I came, Sieg mentioned that he was quite seriously injured. Is he alright?"
Candice replied, "He just finished surgery and was taken to the ICU. The doctor said he needs to be observed overnight to prevent infection."
Hanley nodded. "I’m glad he’s okay."
Candice looked at him, wanting to say more, but hesitated. "Aren't you supposed to be in South City?" she finally asked.
Hanley paused for a moment, and his gaze directed at Candice became somewhat complex. "I had to return to Dorrington for some family matters. Coincidentally, I heard about your situation, so I came over. I'll be going to my mom's place tomorrow."
Candice hadn't realized it herself, but she felt a sense of relief in her heart. She was actually a little afraid that Hanley had come specifically because of her.
