Chapter 21 Let It Go

Nolan pushed open the bathroom door and went out. Peyton had just collected her hair over the bed. She was startled by Nolan. She looked at him and said guiltily, “You…”

Before she could finish her words, she realized Nolan was bare- chested. He was in good shape.

Although Nolan was her husband, Peyton still felt strange to see Nolan naked after a year. She looked away quickly.

Nolan came closer. She could feel his breath. Peyton unconsciously curled up her body and stared at him with a protective face. “What are you going to do?”

Nolan slowly bent down, and his deep gaze fell on her pale cheek. He asked, “You said you were sick before. What is it?”

His eyes were full of questions. Peyton had mixed feelings. Content is property of NôvelDrama.Org.

There was no trace of sarcasm, arrogance, or coldness in his eyes. Nolan cared about her health.

Peyton suddenly wondered, “If I tell him everything, will he regret what he did before?”

As Peyton hesitated, Nolan leaned his body toward her. They were so close to each other. He seemed to be able to see through her.

Nolan urged, “Tell me.”

Peyton panicked and felt nervous. She licked her lips and said, “I…”

Suddenly, Nolan’s phone rang. It was Helena’s exclusive ringtone, which had haunted Peyton for over a year.

When she and Nolan were together, he would always leave Peyton after he received Helena’s call.

Now this ringtone made Peyton feel uneasy.

It reminded her of all those unpleasant memories.

She found herself stupid. She wondered, “How could I still believe him since he has let me down so many times?”

Nolan hung up the phone and turned to look at Peyton. Peyton had made up her mind.

Peyton said to Nolan, “Nothing. I got a bad cold and spent several days in the hospital.”

Nolan remembered the bouquet of withered flowers in their wedding house. He thought, “Well, so Peyton didn’t come back for a few days because she had a cold.”

It had been three months since their last phone call. Nolan had no idea when Peyton was in the hospital.

Nolan felt a little painful and guilty.

He thought, “No wonder she looked pale now.”

Nolan wanted to say something, but he failed.

Nolan didn’t know how to comfort her.

“I’m alright, Nolan. Since we hate each other, just let it go. I’m exhausted. Let’s get divorced.”

Nolan thought of Peyton’s smile toward Alwyn outside the Courthouse. Nolan’s jealousy grew.

Nolan thought Peyton wanted to divorce him because of Alwyn.

“No way.”

Nolan sneered. He pinched Peyton’s chin and said to her, “How can I let you live happily without me?”

Then, Nolan went to the bathroom full of anger.

Nolan didn’t see any hair on the bed. He was worried about Peyton’s health, but she only wanted a divorce.

He wondered, “Does she love Alwyn so much?

“Three months ago, Peyton was still on her knees to beg me not to divorce her, but now she says she hates me.”

Nolan stared at his face in the mirror. He thought, “Is Peyton tired of

me?”

Peyton didn’t understand Nolan anymore. He was so fractious.

Nolan wanted to divorce her before. But now he was angry because she mentioned it. Peyton thought, “Is he insane because of her sister’s death?”

Nolan washed up and went out. Peyton lay on the bed and turned her back upon him.

Nolan didn’t say goodbye to her. He closed the door and left.

Peyton knew she was too weak and could do nothing about it. So she didn’t try to escape.

Olivia was the only one who hadn’t changed. She was enthusiastic and cooked delicious food for Peyton as usual.

“Mrs. Dalton, I’ve prepared chicken soup for you. It’s good for your health.”

Peyton smiled gently. “Olivia, I want some fish soup.”

“Alright.”

Olivia looked outside and said, “The yard is covered by snow. Don’t you want to go out and play? I remember you used to like having snowball fights with Nolan. You can do that again.”

“No, I want some rest.”

Olivia closed the door for Peyton. She felt strange. Peyton didn’t like eating fish before. And Peyton used to be a lively girl. Olivia didn’t know why Peyton looked listless recently. Peyton barely left her bedroom.

Olivia assumed that Peyton was angry with Nolan.

Peyton rested in bed for a few days, and she felt better. She ate much nutritious food every day to stabilize her condition.

Nolan went home every night. But they never communicated. They slept back to back, far away from each other.

Peyton didn’t know what Nolan wanted. She felt much better today. It was still early, and Nolan hadn’t come back.

Peyton went out of the bedroom for the first time and entered Nolan’s study. She was entering the password when Olivia called her.

Peyton was startled. These days, Olivia took pity on Peyton and lent Peyton her phone.

Peyton contacted Jackson, but he hadn’t found out the cause of Leilani’s death.

So, Peyton planned to take risks and searched Nolan’s study.

Seeing Olivia, Peyton thought her plan failed. To her surprise, Olivia said, “Mrs. Dalton, this door was broken, so we changed the lock. You’ll need fingerprints. Let me help you.”

Olivia wiped her hand with her apron and opened the study. Peyton didn’t know what to say.

Olivia thought Peyton just quarreled with Nolan, so she didn’t take it seriously.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll cook fish soup for you.”

Peyton entered Nolan’s study. It looked exactly the same as before. Nolan was a well–organized person, and Peyton knew where he kept his files.

Soon, Peyton found a safe. There were Nolan’s memories with his sister in it, including their childhood photos and toys.

Nolan never shared his sorrow for his sister’s death with Peyton.

Peyton was nervous when she entered the password.

The password used to be Peyton’s birthday, but Peyton was afraid that Nolan had changed it to Helena’s birthday.

Peyton had a self–mocking smile and tried her birthday. To her surprise, Nolan didn’t change the password.

Peyton had mixed feelings. She opened the safe, and there were many

items in it. She noticed a file bag with “verification of death” on it.

Peyton quickly took it out. Just after sweeping a few lines, she heard a cold voice coming from the door. “Are you a thief?”

Chapter 22 Your So–called Honorable Father

Peyton was focusing on the documents. Nolan’s sudden question scared her so much that she fell to the ground, the documents in her hands scattering everywhere.

She wondered, “Nolan usually came back late at night. Why did he return so early today?”

Although Peyton was still Nolan’s nominal wife, her sneaking into his study was disgraceful. Moreover, she knew that he hated others playing tricks behind his back the most.

She swallowed subconsciously, and the expression on her face was unnatural. “You… you are back.”

Perhaps because Nolan had just attended a banquet, he was wearing a black–and–white suit, which set off his tall and straight figure. His cold eyes were fixed on Peyton, and Peyton couldn’t help but feel chill.

Nolan walked toward Peyton while taking off his suit jacket unhurriedly. He was born into a wealthy family, and his every move captured elegance and dignity.

Peyton couldn’t think straight when she saw Nolan take off his clothes. She wanted to escape, yet something seemed to root her on the spot.

Before she was in a relationship with Nolan, he was known as a ruthless devil who would achieve his goals by every means.
