Chapter 1297
Alongside his anger, Orion felt a sharp pang of guilt. His parents had once suggested sending Hope to a welfare home, but he had wanted to keep her because he liked her as a sister. But what he had brought into their home wasn't a sister, it was someone who could kill. "Get out! Go far away. I never want to see you again!" he shouted, pushing her away when she tried to grab his sleeve. She fell to the ground, landing heavily.
Mrs. Watson stepped out of the kitchen holding a cake, and when she saw the scene, she started to go over to help Hope.Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
But before she could get too close, she heard Orion snap, "Stop pretending to be pitiful. You're so fake and disgusting. You poisoned my sister, and you think I'd feel sorry for you?"
Mrs. Watson froze, her eyes widening in disbelief.
Poison?
She looked at Hope, unable to connect the idea of poisoning with this small child who barely came up to her waist. How could someone so young do something so cruel?
Then, out of the corner of her eye, Mrs. Watson spotted the cake on the table and remembered how Hope had been asking for sweets lately.
Suddenly, it all clicked into place. "Hope, so you didn't really want sweets. You just wanted to get rid of me. And to think, I just thought you were a kid with a sweet tooth. I couldn't understand why you didn't eat much of the tarts I made yesterday!"
A cold sweat ran down her back. If Nina hadn't caught Hope in the act, she would have continued baking, thinking Hope was just a child with innocent cravings.
"Nash, after what she did, I can't bear to have her here a moment longer. We need to send her away," Nina said, turning to him for his opinion. "But where can we send her?"
The problem was, Hope was a
foreign child. She had no legal status here, essentially an undocumented resident. It was unlikely a welfare home would accept her. And calling the police wouldn't help much either. They couldn't exactly send a child to prison.
"Let's contact the embassy," Nash decided quickly. "We'll send her back to whichever country she came from."
"No! I don't have a mom anymore, and Yorubaland has been at war for years. I don't want to go back alone," Hope cried out, accidentally revealing more than she intended.
Orion clenched his fists, wanting nothing more than to hit her. "So you knew everything all along, but you just wouldn't tell us," he seethed.
He remembered their conversations. He had asked her about her family and where she came from, but she had always pretended not to know anything. It had all been an act.
Hope quickly covered her mouth, but it was too late. She couldn't take back what she had just let slip.
Nina didn't respond to Hope. She kept her gaze fixed on Nash. "Then that's what we'll do. The Yorubaland embassy isn't far from here. Even if she won't speak, they can find her entry records. She came by ptane, so they'll have that information."
The investigation might be a bit more complicated, but it was still better than keeping Hope here. Just the sight of her filled Nina with a deep sense of unease, and it hurt that she couldn't do anything about it. That feeling was the hardest part to endure.
With a heavy thud, Hope dropped to her knees, the impact hard enough to bruise. But she didn't care about the pain.
Desperately, she begged, "Please, let me stay. Don't send me back. If you send me back, I'll die. I really will."
