Chapter 49
Chapter 49
Gwendolyn stood in front of her locker, stuffing her belongings inside. A group of pretty girls approached with clear ill intent.
Turning to face them, Gwendolyn asked coolly, “Can I help you with something?”
“Oh, you brought a lunch box? Let’s see what gourmet delights you’ve got there,” one of the girls, Polly Smith, snatched the box from Gwendolyn’s hands and clumsily dropped it on the
floor.
“Oops, my bad. I just couldn’t hold it right.” Polly said with a malicious grin.
Gwendolyn’s lips pressed tightly together as she watched the meal that Marina had carefully prepared get ruined, anger welling up inside her.
“Getting mad, huh? Country bumpkins are always so sensitive,” Polly said with a mocking sweetness, fanning the air with her hand and asking. “Do you guys smell that? It’s like fox stench.”
“It’s pungent.”
“Gwendolyn, it’s coming from you, isn’t it? Let’s help you out.”
They laughed as they grabbed a bottle of hand sanitizer and started spraying Gwendolyn, mocking her all the while.
“You reek not just of smell, but of that country air too.”
“Gwendolyn, don’t dodge away.”
Mamie stood outside the circle, arms crossed, watching the drama unfold. The girls‘ direct malice was fully exploited by Mamie’s manipulations.
Gwendolyn grabbed a gold needle from her sleeve and jabbed at them, causing them to yelp. She then snatched the sanitizer and sprayed them back furiously, her pretty face set in a cold determination, “You didn’t brush your teeth this morning, and I’m just helping you freshen up.” “How dare you! I’m going to tell my uncle on you.” Polly looked at her with spite, “Just you wait.” “Let’s get out of here.” This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org: ©.
As the girls scattered, Gwendolyn let out a sigh of relief and put the sanitizer aside. Mamie approached, feigning concern, “Gwendolyn, you alright? They really went too far.” “Mamie.” Gwendolyn looked at her, “Drop the act. I can see the venom in your eyes, about to spill over.”
Mamie let out a scoff, “Well, I just stirred them up a bit, and who knew they’d be so impulsive, even sanitizing you.”

Gwendolyn picked up a broom and swept the scattered food from the floor, Ignoring Mamie.
“Gwendolyn, do you know who Polly’s uncle is? It’s Mack, the guy in charge of the interns. You’ve crossed her, and now you’re done for.”
“I’m here to intern at the hospital, not to play games with you,” Gwendolyn’s voice was cold, her eyes distant and icy. She changed back into her coat, fixed her hair, and left.
Mamie sneered sarcastically to herself, but she wasn’t about to let it go. She pulled out her designer phone and dialed Scott, “Scott. I’ve got a great way to get back at Gwendolyn. Are you in?”
Whatever the hospital valued most, she planned to destroy for Gwendolyn.
In the director’s office, the middle–aged and slightly portly Mack, wearing round glasses, looked at the exceptionally pretty girl before him.
“Gwendolyn, right?”
“Yes,” Gwendolyn stood up straight.
“Our Acupuncture and Rehabilitation department is Bayridge Hospital’s pride. Not just anyone can stay on here. The supervising physicians don’t have room for more interns at the moment. so you’ll start as an assistant. You’ll be mainly responsible for Ward 2103. Don’t mess up.”
An assistant was essentially a gofer, akin to an orderly.
All the dirty and exhausting work would be hers to do.
Gwendolyn slowly lifted her gaze to him, “Okay.”
She knew Mack was deliberately making things difficult, ready to kick her out at the first mistake.
“Young people need to be put through their paces. In a week, there’ll be an intern assessment, and those who fail will be sent back to school.”
Gwendolyn nodded and walked away.
Outside the office door, a gaggle of girls clustered together, faces gleeful with anticipation of drama.
