My Mute Wife

Chapter 78 Not an accident, But a Sin

Lexie didn’t sleep well this night.

It was excessively quiet in the house, and she had a nightmare.

In the dream, the Howard family was chasing after her with a knife in their hands, and when she reached a forest, everyone behind her was holding a torch.

She screamed for help, but her throat hurt so badly that she couldn’t get it out.

“Ah…”

She broke out in a cold sweat and jerked her eyes open.

The curtains were undrawn, and the moonlight from outside shone in, faintly on the wall lamp, like a ghostly shadow.

“Click,” a sound of opening door was sounded, and Lexie hugged the covers tightly at once.

The tall figure was illuminated by the light from outside, casting long shadows on the carpet.

“It’s me.”

A familiar voice rang out, and Lexie looked at the visitor in a daze, looking as if she hadn’t yet awakened from her nightmare, her face white in the moonlight.

With a ‘snap’, the lights turned on and the room was instantly much brighter.Text © by N0ve/lDrama.Org.

Looking at Lexie, who was still shaking, Alan suddenly felt heartahce and walked over with broad steps, “Having a nightmare?”

It was in the bright light that Lexie snapped out of it and gave a wooden nod.

“It’s okay, it’s all in the past.”

[What brings you here?]

It was already past two in the morning, and seeing the alarm clock by the bed, Lexie even thought that this was the dream.

“Come back and get something.”

Get something? In your pajamas?

Lexie’s eyes fell on what Alan was wearing.

If he remembered correctly, these were his pajamas from the Howard’s villa, the green and grey suit.

“Drink some water.” Alan poured her a glass of water.

[Thank you.]

“What was the dream about, was it that terrible?”

Thinking back to the dream she had just had, Lexie still had palpitations.

But she shook her head, [Can’t quite remember.].

A dream was rather exhausting, and she couldn’t help but yawn.

“Go to bed early.”

Lexie faintly stared, [Are you going to sleep here too?]

“This is my home, where am I going to sleep if not here?”

[Didn’t you come back for something?]

“You’re rushing me to leave?”

[That’s not what I meant.]

Lexie shook her head.

“Then go to sleep,” Alan jerked the cup out of her hand, casually resting it on the bed, and before Lexie could return to her senses, he embraced her and pressed her against the pillow.

The force coming from the man’s hand was a little heavy, but somehow transmitted a feeling of solidity and reassurance.

Lexie slowly closed her eyes and accepted the fact.

Early the next morning.

Stanley was feeding the fish at the lake.

“Alan came by last night?”

“Nothing can be hidden from you,” confessed Butler Lee, “indeed, he arrived at two in the morning, but he left early this morning and caught the morning meeting over at the group, and everything was normal.”

“You think this is normal?” Stanley scattered a handful of all the fish food in his hand, instantly causing a group of carp to scramble for it.

Butler Lee said, “I heard the doctor say that Mr. Alan has been able to sleep without medication for some time, I think this might have something to do with Mrs. Howard, in fact, if you want to really toss Mr. Alan back and forth like this every day, you might as well let Mrs. Howard go back.”

“The more he does like this, the more I can’t let this mute go.”

“Why?”

“Men are meant to do great things, for the sake of these small love ties, his future is destined to achieve nothing, our family do not have this precedent!”

Butler Lee was stunned, “You’re thinking of Mr. Vincent again.”

Stanley held onto the railing, his withered cheeks reflecting in the middle of the lake, showing a hint of decadence, “Isn’t the lesson of Alan’s father enough?”

“That was just an accident.”

“It’s not an accident, it’s a sin, so there must be no more of this kind of womanizing on Alan.”

Stanley straightened up and asked, “Is he still checking out the Mitchell family lately?”

“Yes, and a few days ago, he checked Peter’s bank accounts overseas and found that he has a tendency to transfer funds, and he has already had people leaving preparations.”

“He is still sober, keep watching and report back to me if anything goes wrong.”

“Yes.”

“…”

For several days in a row, Lexie stayed at the mountain villa, Alan would come late at night, and Lexie gradually got used to his presence.

It was a strange feeling, like cheating, yet reassuring to her.

In this huge mountain villa, Alan had actually become the only one she relied on.

“Mrs. Howard, are you going out?”

[I’ve been out too long and want to go back to see Grandma.]

Lexie carried her bag and carefully inquired, [Is it not allowed?]

The maid said, “No, but, didn’t Butler Lee say you couldn’t go out alone but someone should drive you out?”

[No, it’s easier for me to drive there myself.]

“Then go back early.”

Driving away from the resort, Lexie watched the gate getting farther and farther away in the rearview mirror before she let out a sigh of relief.

Stanley didn’t seem to have much ill will towards her, except for the first night when he made her kneel in the ancestral hall, he hadn’t treated her badly after that, and her movements were all free.

Back in the city, Lexie drove the car directly to the alley in the old town.

“Lexie, here!”

Across the street, Myles waved at her.

It’s an old neighborhood, marked in many places for demolition, and the alley curves were hard to be found.

“Didn’t get hard time about coming out, did you?”

Lexie shook her head.

“This way,” Myles led her into a tailor’s shop, greeted the old tailor in the shop, and then lifted the curtain to lead Lexie to the backyard.

Flora had already had tea ready under the old acacia tree.

[Sorry I’m late.]

“It is okay, I’m on leave today,” Flora raised her chin towards the front, “It’s almost demolished here, it is not easy to be found, right?”

[Yes.]

Myles said, “This is the tailor shop of Flora’s Grandpa, so it is quite safe to gather here.”

“Let’s get down to business,” Flora dipped her fingers in water and scratched some lines on the stone table, “I’ve studied the route, when it rains heavily, the traffic network in these places is without signal, and this is also an accident-prone road, so it won’t be a problem to hide it.”

Lexie nodded with a look of gratitude.

“Replacement body has been ready. The person died more than a month, but it has been well preserved, and it has similar body shape to yours. By the time the car burns down and the person is disfigured, it will be fine.”

[That works?]

Lexie was amazed.

Myles glanced at Flora, “You think she’s been doing nothing in the Detective Bureau all these years? There are still quite a few places over in the black market that do business in ghost marriages now, so it’s kind of a grey business.”

Ghost marriages?

Lexie had heard of it, and suddenly there was some bitterness in her heart.

How could she have ever imagined that she would one day be involved with something like this.

Flora sipped her tea and looked at the sky, “Now we’re just waiting for a stormy weather.”

The sky in J City was clear, and it had been a few days of great sunshine.

The car was parked across the street from a department store in Old Town.

“Mr. Alan, I’ve actually seen the locations of those nail houses before, and they don’t have much impact on the planning.”

In the back seat, Alan looked through the car window towards the outside, but saw a white car across the street with a somewhat familiar license plate number.
