Chapter 78
Chapter 78
Gwendolyn stood frozen until a forceful shove jolted her from behind.
“Gwendolyn, I’ve finally got my chance.” The sinister voice slithered from beside her as Scott brandished a knife, its blade glinting ominously against her throat.
Held captive at the deserted bus stop, Gwendolyn could feel Scott’s breath on her neck, as loathsome as a snake’s hiss. “I’ve been watching you, sweetheart. Don’t even think about pulling any of your tricks with a needle, or I’ll slice open your throat!”
“What do you want?” Gwendolyn asked, her forehead beaded with cold sweat as she feigned composure.
“Bitch! So, you’ve already married that cripple! My family’s been ruined, bankrupt, and ! want him to taste what it’s like to have the woman I’ve played with!” Scott’s grip tightened on Gwendolyn, and he dragged her toward the dense shrubbery.
“Once I’ve fucked you, let’s see if he still wants you!”
“I’ll call the cops!” Gwendolyn’s voice was ice.
“Playing the chaste heroine, are you?”
Scott was a mess, exuding a foul stench. He even pulled out a length of hemp rope, binding Gwendolyn’s hands with it.
Bang! A loud noise echoed.
Gwendolyn felt the weight behind her fall away, and turning, she saw a man in camo gear tossing a rock back into the roadside flowerbed.
“Mrs. Chadwick, you must be scared. Leave this scum to me. Mr. Chadwick is waiting for you in the car up ahead.” Saying, he efficiently dragged the unconscious Scott away.
Gwendolyn hurriedly inquired, “Where are you taking him?”
“To the police station, of course.”
Realizing she was in the company of a law–abiding fellow, Gwendolyn breathed a sigh of relief.
She hastened to the Rolls–Royce and got inside. When she was seated, the after–shock hit her, her nerves on edge.
“Mr. Chadwick, did you send that man to protect me?”
Howard looked at her pale face and said, “I couldn’t risk anything happening to you.” He had anticipated revenge from the Bainbridge but hadn’t foreseen the need so soon.
“Scott said his family is bankrupt. Did you have a hand in that?”

“What’s wrong?” he inquired.
Im just tired, feeling like a lot happened today,” Gwendolyn said with a furrowed brow. Grandma wants to leave the hospital and return to the countryside. I hate to let her go, but she says she misses her friends there and feels lonely without anyone to talk to in the hospital”
“You’re worried the Sawyer family might threaten her again once she’s back?”
“Yes”
‘Til hire a female bodyguard for her. Someone to protect her and help with her daily needs,” he offered thoughtfully, suggesting the best course of action.
“But that would add to your burden, Mr. Chadwick. I already owe you so much.”
“Keep it in the ledger. There’ll come a time when I’ll need your help.”
Howard didn’t dismiss it as ‘employee benefits” this time. “Gwendolyn, you’re valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.”
“Okay.” Gwendolyn looked up at him earnestly, her memory etching every word.
‘Plan a weekend trip and take her home,” Howard said lightly.
“Sure,” she nodded obediently. Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
As Howard was about to add more, his phone vibrated. He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression turned stern as he took the call.
Whatever was said on the other end only served to harden his features further.
“Bring him to my place!” Howard’s voice was bone–chilling cold.
